Late Blight Information

News alert—– The tomato blight from last year is back!  It has been found in Blair County. Not only does it affect tomatoes but also potatoes and petunias.  The disease, once it’s on your plants, wipes them out in about 3 to 4 days.  So that means that you need to keep a careful eye out for it.

What does it look like?  It starts out looking a greenish-gray to black spot on the top of the leaf.  Then it starts affecting the plant’s stem. It will eventually spread to the underside of the leaf. You need to be very careful when you are working with it because it spreads easily through the air or by contact with people or animals.

What should be done with it? “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It is better to take action before the blight infects your plants. A weekly application of fungicide is able to protect them from the spores. When you go to choose a fungicide make sure it contains chlorothalonil or mancozeb. We are carrying the products you need to keep your tomatoes, potatoes and petunias healthy for the year. When you see that your plants have blight, you need to take action. If it is just a small spot, you can just pull off that part of the plant and see if that takes care of it. Otherwise put a plastic garbage bag over the infected plant and pull it out. Knot the bag and lay it in the hot sun for a few days till the plant dies. Then dispose of the bag and all.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call here at TMM. We will be glad to help you!
