Brrrrr…. It’s so cold! How are your fish doin’?
This is a picture of an Aquascape Aerator and De-icer in action. Just got it in today! Hopefully you were more on top of this installation than we were!
Here’s a ‘Gentle Reminder’ Checklist:
- Don’t be feeding your fish! They are hibernating and their metabolism is in low gear. Honestly, they aren’t interested in a Christmas dinner.
- If your pump and waterfall are functioning, make sure the ice formations aren’t diverting water outside of the contained area somewhere.
- If you are not running your pump, your aerator and de-icer should be working in conjunction with each other to keep a whole open in the ice to allow for proper oxygenation and gas exchange. Your pump MUST be stored in a container of water in a frost-free location.
- Add AquaMed’s Arctic Blend Beneficial Bacteria. Add 3 oz every other week. You can dump this in right where your aerator and de-icer are working. This will keep your ecosystem in optimum condition during the bleak mid-winter and will definitely make your spring pond clean-out much easier. Not to mention your appreciative fish!
If you have any questions about winter pond maintenance, PLEASE give us a buzz @ 814.696.1920 or stop by. We will be more than glad to help you with your questions!

The Importance of Aquascape’s Pond Air System
Aeration is very important during winter months in colder climates since it helps to keep a small hole open in the surface of the pond to aid in proper gas exchange.
Here Fishy, Fishy, Fishy,… Lunchtime!
by Brian J. Horst

Time for food! Here is a must-watch video on how to choose the best food out there for your fish. You see, it really DOES matter what your fish are getting for lunch!
Here are a couple tips I will highlight in regards to feeding your fish.
♦ Don’t over feed your fish. It’s an easy mistake to make. While it’s fun to be their hero and watch them eat, only feed your fish once every 2 to 3 days. And only feed them as much as they will eat while you are standing there, a small handful at a time. Remember, all uneaten fish food will decompose in your pond and cause misery.
♦ Hungry fish are healthy fish. On those days that you don’t feed them, if they get hungry, they will help themselves to algae and other goodies available to them from your pond’s ecosystem.
♦ During the autumn and spring seasons, don’t feed your fish while the water temperatures are below 50° F. While the water temperatures are between the 65-50° F range, feed your fish Aquascape’s Premium Cold Water Fish Food. This food is specifically created to help your fish digest their food more easily when their metabolism has kicked into a lower gear.
