Landscaping Tour shows off backyard escapes

June 7, 2014

You’ve probably heard of house tours to preview houses for sale, so how about an outdoor landscaping tour that shows what’s new in waterfalls and other outdoor options and also helps a good cause?

That’s what Tussey Landscaping of Hollidaysburg offers in its “Outdoor Living Spaces Tour” scheduled for June 21. The tour of 10 homes in Blair County starts at 10 a.m. and runs through 8 p.m., with two sites open until 10 p.m. Evening hours showcase how the landscaping company uses lighting to add extra emphasis to the ponds, waterfalls and other features it installs for its clients, said company owner Steve Martin.

“Lighting brings a whole new life to outdoor living spaces,” Martin said.

Dan Spinazzola of Altoona poses beside his landscaped yard’s two ponds and waterfall, created by Tussey Landscaping of Hollidaysburg. Spinazzola’s yard is part of Tussey’s “Outdoor Living Spaces Tour” on June 21.

Martin’s own home is included on the tour, as it has been in the past, but this year people will see something special, he said. For years, Martin said, he’s promised his wife a garden similar to the one described in the children’s book, “The Secret Garden,” by Frances Hodgson Burnett and this year, she’s getting her wish, he said.

The garden will have trees and vines, giving it a rustic look, Martin said. He has promised his wife it will be finished by the time of the tour, he said.

“She’s been waiting for it for a number of years,” Martin said.

For 18 years, Tussey Landscaping has been helping people plan how to improve their outdoor spaces, according to the company’s website. Sometimes it’s out of necessity, such as when customers are having drainage problems, Martin said. Tussey Landscaping can assist them in resolving the problem in an aesthetically pleasing way, he said.

“Sometimes you can turn lemons into lemonade, fix a problem while at the same time make it look nice,” he said.

Then there are the clients who just want to spruce up their outdoor space, and add beauty to their outdoor areas.

That’s the case with Dan Spinazzola of Altoona, who added two ponds and a waterfall to his yard starting four years ago. He said he’s very pleased with the work that Tussey Landscaping did for him.

“We just wanted our own little getaway, sort of an oasis for ourselves,” said Spinazzola, whose house is included on the tour.

He said the ponds, which he stocked with fish, are very peaceful, as is the waterfall. He enjoys listening to the sound of the water cascading over the rocks. He characterized the work that Tussey Landscaping did for him as “very professional, very good.”

“There’s probably nobody better in my estimation,” he said.

The same is true for another couple who also agreed to have their house on the tour, Joyce and Faber Weakland of Duncansville, who decided they wanted to add a waterfall to their yard. They also had some landscaping work done, such as the installation of paver stones and the planting of flowers, Joyce said.

They’re also very pleased with the results, she said.

“We wanted to try something different,” she said.

Outdoor Living Spaces 2013 Photos

We were blessed with a beautiful day for this tour… Chef Eten was here at the landscape center in the evening, baking his well-loved pizza in our wood-fired pizza oven. We’re happy to announce that we met our goal of raising $1250 for the ARC of Blair County and had a record attendance this year of over 200 people! Thank you for joining us for this event and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

It was an enjoyable day… Thanks to all of you who came out and made this evening a success!

Outdoor Living Spaces Tour

The Outdoor Living Spaces Tour “Moonlight Walk” gives you the opportunity to view some of the nicest landscaping creations in our area at night. Stroll through these landscapes at dusk and see what landscape lighting can bring to your backyard. Whether you are looking for ideas to put into your own back yard, or if you would just like a relaxing evening enjoying the sights of beautiful backyard living spaces, this tour is worth signing up for!

Landscape lighting design is far more than just putting in a few lights; it is a fine art that transforms your nighttime experience. A well designed and installed lighting system is an investment that rewards you every night for years to come. In all of what we call Nature, the moon stands apart. It is the full moon that ignites our passion for light. It is the full moon that we, as designers, strive to recreate. We sincerely want the homeowner to feel the same feelings that the real moon brings in its romantic fullness.

This tour will be happening Saturday, September 14 from 10 am to 10 pm. Here at Tussey Mountain Mulch, we will have our pizza ovens fired up and baking pizza from 5 pm to 10 pm. We hope to see you here!

“Thank you, Tussey Mtn., for the enjoyable moonlight tour of various ponds in our area. Each was unique in their own way. And thank you to all the kind people who opened their homes for us to see their ponds. We will be looking forward to your next tour. Thank you!”                ~The Carusos, Williamsburg, PA

“Just by coincidence I came to TMM and was glad to get a pass for the fountain tour. I am interested in doing one on my property. These were awesome. The pizza was delicious and all was an enjoyable experience and evening.”               ~John Tate, Hollidaysburg, PA

“I loved the Moonlight Walk tour. I got so many great ideas for my pool area. Thank you!”                   ~Chris Gojmerac, Roaring Spring, PA

The Moonlight Walk Tour was a great experience to allow us to share our landscape project and our experience with Tussey Landscaping with others who are interested in outdoor living areas. It was wonderful knowing that the proceeds for the event went to a great charity like the Arc of Blair County!              ~Brent & Cris Leighty, Newry, PA

Thank you for a beautiful evening. I really enjoyed the food and the Pond Tour- so many pleasant feelings!!! Thank you for doing what you do. You are an asset to the community!                   ~Patty Glunt, East Freedom, PA

We went on the Moonlight Tour and what a beautiful night it was.  Tussey Landscape does such beautiful work.  It is like walking into God’s country.  They did a paver patio for us and we just love it on Winterberry Lane in James Creek.                  ~Dave & Nancy Baughman, James Creek,PA

We enjoyed every second of the tour, really wished for more time, time to enjoy the flowers and rocks at each place and then time to go back and see the lighting at our favorite one perhaps. Perfect weather – the whole evening was wonderful – enjoyed talking to several homeowners – made the evening even more special. Thanks again!                                              ~Margie Harclerode, Bedford, PA

Pics & Video of the Moonlight Walk

This year’s Moonlight Walk turned out to be another successful one! We want to thank each one of you who made this possible, and would like to share some pictures with you.

Wow! What gorgeous landscapes! Makes a person wish that would be in their yard! The video below has a number of testimonials of people who went on the tour.

Here is another testimony from a customer:

We really enjoyed the Outdoor Living Tour last evening – All were different and we were always anxious to see the next property. Each was special and spectacular and had something that made it different. Loved all the waterfalls, especially as we are all Discovery Garden volunteers and are so happy with “our” waterfall. We especially enjoyed meeting your designer and seeing all the features of his home – also great to talk to him and his wife. He is a very talented young man.
We were somewhat disappointed as we went to the last two properties shortly before 10:00 PM and found they were not open for viewing. I registered online and used the Tour Book which listed time as 5:00 PM - 10:30 PM. Times were different in your newsletter which I received in the mail and on website. I’m sure you will address that for future years. Mrs Leighty was nice enough to tell us we could come back this week to see their property in daylight. ~Nancy Fogel

Thanks again to all of you for making this a go. We look forward to the next one already! Come see us soon!
